Ecology of subtidal and intertidal meiobenthos communities, focusing in marine free-living nematodes assemblages.

The scientific activity is focus on baseline studies of Ecological processes in sediments of estuarine and sandy beaches ecosystems. The studies are been developed on structure and functioning of free-living marine nematodes communities of intertidal and subtidal sediments, including Zostera seagrass beds and sandy beaches. The studies are been integrated in analyzing of a) the response of the communities to natural and human induced physical and chemical changes, namely to the extreme events related with climatic changes; b) biological conservation and habitat restoration strategies. The main objective is to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of meiofauna communities as a response to natural and human disturbance, in intertidal and subtidal sediments and compare with the macrofauna response. Moreover, a field experimental approach was been developed to elucidate the meiofauna and nematodes response to a extreme events.

present investigation interests
The functional response of meiofauna and free-living nematodes to environmental changes conditions can be useful in assessing biological quality in coastal marine ecosystems. The present research is focus in the temporal and spatial pattern distribution of the structural characteristics of the intertidal and subtidal meiobenthic communities: 1) to identify the natural and anthropogenic drivers and pressures structuring assemblages; 2) to distinguish the natural from man-induced stressors on the functional features of the communities, 3) Compare the resolution of meiofauna and macrofauna assemblages to the disturbance effects. The response of free-living nematodes to extreme events related with climatic changes. A field manipulation experiment was been carried out at geographically separated European locations to investigate the response of meiofauna communities to increased intensity and frequency of rainfall as predicted by climate change models.

The new approach was been develloped based on molecular tecniques to study the response of marine nematodes communities
