domain of specialization
My research focuses on understanding food web dynamics in marine ecosystems in relation to environmental change.

Responsible for co-leading the Polar science, education and outreach activities of Portugal during the International Polar Year.

Research areas: Marine Biology, Behavioural Ecology, Oceanography, Modelling, Foraging and Feeding Ecology

Study animals: penguins, albatrosses, seals and other mammals, sharks, conger eels and other fish, turtles and special attention to cephalopods in the diet of top predators.

Study areas: Antarctic and Atlantic Oceans, with fieldwork on islands or on scientific cruises

present investigation interests
- Behavioural ecology of top predators in relation to climate change in the Antarctic Ocean: will they be able to adapt?
- Squid, fish or krill: do penguins, seals or albatrosses really have a choice on what to eat?
- Quantification of the impact of predators in ocean resources: implications on conservation and fisheries management

other skills/activities
Interested in public understanding of science, particularly linking young scientists, schools, the media, politicians and the general public, in Portugal and internationally:
