Within "Environome", efforts will be addressed to improve the knowledge on the link between individual responses and molecular responses (proteins and genes) to stressors. This way we will get the hold of the continuum of biological response.

Moreover, at the end of this project we expect to have a better understanding of toxicants pathways of toxicity and to have developed and validated a set of effective molecular tools (proteomics and transcriptomics) to assess the effects of pesticides in edaphic invertebrates, and transpose them to field exposure bioassay scenarios

GENEROSI aims at assessing the occurrence of contaminant-driven genetic erosion in populations of amphibians and its possible consequences in the viability their viability under scenarios of future environmental stressors.

To completely achieve these goals, 3 specific objectives were delineated, to evaluate: (i) if metal contamination led to the genetic erosion of exposed populations; (ii) possible mechanisms associated with increased resistance to metals; (iii) if resistance to metals is associated with an increased susceptibility to pathogens (considered one of amphibians’ major threats)

One of the highest challenges in developed countries is to attract students to STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering e Mathematics).

In “Profession: Polar Scientist”, it is aimed to take (early career) polar scientists to secondary schools to explain what a (polar) scientist does, the importance of STEM disciplines to a science career and provide an overview of the science conducted by Portuguese scientists.

The project also aims to use innovative ways to communicate science in schools combining lectures using powerpoint, polar films (produced by the scientists themselves), educational experiments and the use of scientific equipment used in the Arctic or Antarctic, in the classrooms.

The polar regions have an important role in our planet. Portugal has scientists that carry out research in the Arctic and the Antarctic, addressing issues such as the effects of climate change on penguin populations to permafrost, in a wide range of research disciplines.

Through a range of initiatives (e.g. exhibitions, educational materials, workshops, going to schools), within international partners (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists and Polar Educators International), we aim to bring together scientists working in the polar regions, teachers/educators and students to promote, stimulate and educate generations about the importance of the polar regions, provide examples of the polar science carried out by portuguese teams and inspire these younger generations to perform better in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines.

The project aims the evaluation of the antioxidant activity and protection on cell death by new di(hetero)arylamines.

These molecules will be synthesized by a palladium-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling (Buchwald-Hartwig coupling) using different functionalized aromatic and heteroaromatic component couplings, in the Centre of Chemistry of the University of Minho.

The potential antioxidant effect of the new di(hetero)arylamines will be evaluated by the research team of the Centre of Biology of the University of Minho, in collaboration with researchers of the University of Coimbra's IMAR, where specific techniques for determination of the involvement of mitochondrial bioenergetics will be adapted to the outlined objectives.

Specifically, the project aims primarily to gain information on changes occurring in the yeast transcriptome as a result of cells exposure to sub-lethal and environmentally relevant levels of herbicides from different chemical classes, by using Affymetrix GeneChip Yeast Genome 2.0 arrays.

Whenever adequate, mRNA quantification using Northern blot hybridisations or quantitative two-step RT-PCR may be used to confirm and get a clearer picture of the dose- and/or time-dependency of the expression of particularly relevant genes.

Results to be obtained will enable the identification of genes that are up- or down-regulated in response to each toxicant exposure and the estimation of indices of herbicide toxicity with basis on dose-response data concerning changes of the expression of relevant genes.

One main objective of the project is to identify yeast genes of interest whose expression is modified in response specifically to a particular herbicide or a chemical class of herbicides.

The current proposal seeks the support needed to implement and further develop molecular approaches in marine biodiversity research in Portugal.

We aim to establish a reference library linking molecular markers and museum vouchers, and to gain insight into phylogeographic patterns of selected fauna. This project will provide the first national database integrating biogeographic, ecologic and molecular information on marine life, and it is confidently expected that our results will act as the national reference for future marine biodiversity studies.

In addition to implementing technical and logistic research capabilities, another important goal of our project is to train specialized researchers with updated skills in marine biodiversity science, spanning both conventional and molecular approaches.

The DNA barcoding methodology will involve:
1) extensive collection of specimens along the Portuguese mainland coast, offshore regions and archipelagos,
2) taxonomic identification and assembly of Reference Collections,
3) obtaining partial sequences (approximately 650 bp) of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) from voucher specimens,
4) databasing and data analysis and
5) testing species hypothesis and revising current taxonomy when required.

Here, we propose to address several aspects of global warming in streams by a whole-stream manipulative experiment.

We will divide a small stream (ca. 5 L/s) by a longitudinal barrier (~40m); temperature will be increased in half stream, by 3ºC, above ambient water temperature with the help of a system of electric water heaters.

Experiments will be performed in both sides of the watercourse for 1 year of natural water temperature conditions and similar warming period (BACI design; annex I).

We expect to get insight on the effects of global warming on streams functional and structural integrity.

This research project proposes to study properties of the precipitation and air temperature processes that could help filling this gap for Mainland Portugal; the study will use innovative tools from fractal and multifractal theories, and other types of (more conventional) statistical analyses/methods (e.g. Gumbel, SPI, PCI, trend tests).

One of the aims of the study is to evaluate the risk of events potentially leading to floods and hydro-meteorological droughts. This will take advantage of the fact that multifractals can handle a huge range of temporal, spatial and dynamical scales.

Multifractals allow us to study in the same conceptual framework normal and extreme events, offering practical tools and new approaches for assessing their probability of occurrence, as well as to quantify the variability in the processes of precipitation and air temperature.

The study will analyse data from about 120 meteorological and udometric stations scattered over the territory.

In Mainland Portugal, the variation in climate factors is small, although it is still sufficient to explain significant variations in air temperature and precipitation amounts.

Studies at national/regional scale, complementary to the ones conducted at global scale, can contribute to support mitigation and adaptation measures/policies to a changing environment. If land use systems are not adapted, these changes may accelerate desertification and soil degradation.

This project will have two lines of research,
1) an empirical line focussed on two new and exciting themes in evolutionary biology: host-parasite interactions and ecological immunology and
2) a more applied line of research that aims to gather baseline information about over the type of human pathogens from which migratory shorebirds may serve as reservoirs.

The first line of research aims to understand the factors that promote transmission of infectious diseases in migratory shorebirds and the second to provide information that may have important implications for public health.

Although there is a considerable amount of descriptive information on the pathogens that may infect waterbirds or that use waterbirds has their natural reservoirs, there is still very little understanding of the processes and mechanisms that may promote or prevent these infections.

This proposal investigates biological processes controlling sediment erosion/deposition and their effects on estuarine sedimentary dynamics in tidal areas of the Tagus estuary.

We will assess hydrodynamic effects on erosion and sedimentation processes of natural estuarine sediments over repeated tidal cycles and the role of two densities of organisms of different functional groups and bioturbation strategies on the stability/erodibility of these sediments.

This knowledge, together with the study of fluvial lithofacies and their lateral variations, will permit to evaluate:
a) the importance of the different controls on the Tejo and Mondego rivers and their response to those controls;
b) the complexity of cyclic incision and aggradation events in a context of regional progressive tectonic uplift.

We believe that the uplift is responsible for the terrace staircases and for the recent "rejuvenation" of the drainage, shown in geomorphologic characteristics. The correlation of fluvial terraces with marine terraces adjacent to the Tejo and Mondego Atlantic outlets will enable us to evaluate the average of the actual vertical displacement of the land and the apparent and real sea-level changes

This project will use a population of known-age birds to test new and exciting ideas concerning the development of avian senescence.

Birds are exceptionally long-lived, and recent research suggests that they might remain physically fit until old age, before falling victims to some sort of terminal illness.

By studying the breeding performance, foraging behaviour and survival of very old individuals (in comparison with mid-aged birds) we will test the alternative hypotheses of progressive senescence and terminal illness, for example. Using known-age birds, we will also test hypotheses related to the development of breeding versus foraging competence, and the management of conflicts between current reproduction and the safeguard of residual reproductive value.

We will use experimental approaches to disentangle the separate contribution of critical variables. For example, to study the regulation of parental care at the brooding stage, we will manipulate chick age and body condition by swapping chicks between nests. This project will use state-of-the-art technology, namely bird-borne miniaturised data-loggers (Geolocators) recording light levels, activity and seawater temperature, to reconstruct the foraging trips and activity of nesting Cory's Shearwaters Calonectris diomedea.

These birds range over vast areas of the ocean during foraging trips that often cover thousands of kilometres in pelagic waters, and frequently reaching adjoining continental shelves.

This work will focus on the multifractal analysis of precipitation time series from the Azores and Madeira Islands.

Typically, these islands have a small area and strong orographic amplitude; therefore, in these islands, the spatial variation of climatic conditions is larger than in more flat regions. The diversity of climate singularities is explained by the orography.

The analysis of the precipitation data proposed will contribute to the better understanding of precipitation in these regions of Portugal.

The data are from a large number of locations distributed over the Islands (80 in the Azores region and 26 in the Madeira region), differing with respect to climatic origin.

The time span of the records is up to about 30 years in Azores and 52 years in Madeira. Monthly, daily and hourly data will be analysed.

This study will investigate the type of precipitation regime observed in the different Islands, included in the Azores and Madeira regions; it will also quantify the precipitation variability, including seasonal and inter-annual variability.

The main objective of this study is to identify changes in the benthic communities related to natural stress caused by freshwater discharges in different habitat types, by comparing two estuaries with different anthropogenic impacts.

Complementarily, the comparison between the northern and southern branches of the Mondego estuary will provide some evidence on the differences of benthic communities related to distinct flow regimes and results will be validated with mesocosm experiments.

A Benthic Index will be used to determine the influence natural stress on the assessment of the ecological status of benthic communities.

The results obtained with the present study can provide an important support to define a monitoring design for benthic invertebrates, since the ecological status classification has to exclude natural stress impacts to be as comparable as possible between regions with different flow regimes.

The main objective of this proposed research project is to study the transport mechanism of sediments and agrochemicals in overland flow generated by wind-driven rains.

This proposal suggests laboratory soil flume experiments, with a movable sprinkling-type rainfall simulator, simulating a moving wind-driven rain storm. In the present research proposal, results should indicate and quantify how storm characteristics (e.g. speed, pattern, intensity, direction and length) and respective runoff response affect the transport mechanism of sediments and chemicals.

A physically based numerical model will be constructed to study the influence of storm movement on the referred processes as a follow up of the work of Deng et al. (2004).

The laboratory experiments will be used to confirm the numerical results.

The results of the experiments and subsequent numerical modelling will be used to support the argument that wind-driven rain are important to obtain reliable estimates of peak discharges, soil loss and agro-chemical transport.

The objectives of this proposed research are to analyze the importance of litterfall inputs and decomposition in tropical stream ecosystems and compare them with those on forest floor.

Specifically, in both, streams and adjacent soils, we will estimate:
1) annual inputs of litterfall,
2) leaf-litter physical and chemical properties and decomposition rates of selected tree species,
3) the contribution of microbialvs.detritivores decomposition and
4) retention of organic matter in the streams.

We will test some of current ecological assumptions (are tropical tree species better protected against herbivory? are tropical streams functionally different because of lack of shredders?) and will gather information to understand nutrient cycling in these systems, useful to assess sustainability of several forest practices.

This project builds on the knowledge acquired with the preceding GEO-Waste Siting Project and proposes the development of a integrated model for the location and implementation of infra-structures, aiming specially at application to waste management systems.

The methodology will integrate several components, namely interactive methodologies in the structuring of forums for the collaborative resolution of problems, and new technologies of information for spatial simulations facilitating the visualization of alternatives and effects.

The model to be proposed will be organized in modules adjusting to the different phases of the process assuring greater flexibility of application and validation.

The model will privilege risk communication and public participation. The expected products include the construction of knowledge in the resolution of complex problems, the development of operational methodologies of participation, namely taking advantages of the new technologies of information, a guide of good practices, a toolbox for integrated conflict management, in this case applied to the waste management systems but with the possibility of a wider utilization.

Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus are two important species present in the Portuguese forests, and they are widely used in the wood industry, having high economical value.

Therefore, the study of the role of water and nutrients in the forest ecology and productivity of these two species is important for Portugal.

In this project, a greenhouse laboratory study is proposed to evaluate the water and nutrient balances in the atmosphere-plant-soil system and to provide evidence of the improvement in the growth of Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus seedlings, and in the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, due to the presence of mycorrhizae, for the conditions of the Centre of Portugal.

Little Terns, the most estuarine of all tern species, are susceptible to food shortages and disturbance of their nesting areas, sandy beaches and salinas. This project evaluates their reproductive parameters, colony and nest-site selection, diet and foraging habitats in order to assess the value of Little Terns as indicators of changes in estuarine prey stocks, and in the quality of sandy beaches for coastal breeding birds.

The objectives of the present project were therefore focused in the following way :
a) To select, compare, and analyse the efficiency of different ecosystem based concepts, usually translated in the form of different ecological indicators or (as also found in literature) ecological orientors, which may be of use not only for environmental quality assessment, but also for in models development;
b) To test, through their application to the Mondego estuary, the adaptability of ecosystem based concepts such as ecosystem health, ecological integrity, and ecological functionality;
c) To develop a model describing the shift from non-eutrophied to eutrophied scenarios, including the qualitative changes (e.g. species composition) in the communities.

The aim of this project is to provide a broader approach to the cross-shore dynamics in two contrasting environments selected along the Portuguese coast: high energy (Aveiro, Portuguese Western Atlantic Coast) and moderate (Ria Formosa, Portuguese Southern Coast.

Research focus on seasonal changes and changes induced by storm events, in association with the study of socio-economic impacts caused by these changes.

To meet these objectives, an interdisciplinary approach must be undertaken gathering hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics, morphodynamics, and studies on the benthic communities, which are narrowly related with environmental physicochemical characteristics, namely substrata, with economical and sociological analysis.
