Murphy
is an academic journal dedicated to the history and theory of
architecture and urbanism. It is published once or twice a year in
Portuguese and English.
1
_ Murphy will contain previously unpublished academic papers on the
history and theory of architecture and urbanism, with particular
emphasis on those that deal with Portugal or with the territories and
cultural situations influenced by Portuguese culture.
2
_ Murphy will give priority to proposals for articles characterised by
academic rigor and clear writing.
3
_ Articles and reviews should be original and significant, providing
new knowledge in their area of research. They should be
methodologically clear and be based upon research grounded in built,
drawn, bibliographic, iconographic, archaeological or archival
materials, in association with sound theoretical content.
4
_ The journal will also publish methodological and historiographic
papers, but will exclude purely speculative or theoretical essays that
have no original documentary or research basis.
5
_ Murphy will publish four types of article:
a.
In-depth articles whose goal is the systematic study of a historical or
theoretical theme. These should not exceed 60,000 keystrokes, including
footnotes.
b.
Shorter articles (up to 30,000 keystrokes, including footnotes) whose
goal is to study a specific and more restricted theme: a single
building, project, drawing, image, site, written document or idea.
c.
“Theoretical images”, i.e. images (produced
specifically for the journal on any support or by any means that allow
for publication on paper and in the future online edition of Murphy)
that discuss an idea related to the history and/or theory of
architecture and urbanism. The image should be sufficient in itself as
an “image-discourse”, and at most, only a brief
written introduction will be accepted. However, the image should be
accompanied by the required critical apparatus (bibliographic
references, etc.).
d.
Reviews (up to 10,000 keystrokes, including bibliography) of
publications from the previous two years on any Portuguese or
international theme within the journal’s area of interest.
6
_ Articles accepted for publication will be subject to editing by the
journal’s board and scholars of acknowledged academic merit,
selected by the board from among those working in the respective area.
7
_ The articles submitted for publication should be sent on paper, and
using an IT format that is compatible with Word for Windows. Images
(photographs, drawings or maps) should be submitted in good photocopies
or on a digital support (JPG or TIFF), with low resolution. The images
should be numbered and should include an indication of their location
in the text, captions and information on their origin/author.
8
_ Texts and images submitted should not include any identification of
the author. Such information should be included in an accompanying
sealed envelope.
9
_ All works should be sent to the Departamento de Arquitectura da
Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de
Coimbra, Colégio das Artes, Largo D. Dinis, 3000-143
Coimbra, Portugal, addressed to the board of revista Murphy. Unaccepted
material will not be returned.
10
_ Once an article has been accepted for publication, the author will
submit the images in digital support (JPEG or TIFF format) with a
minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
11
_ Except for book reviews, bibliographies will not be included at the
end of articles. The bibliography will appear in the footnotes,
adopting the following criteria:
