The concept of the "Four directions" comes from Taoism, but this print has many other less philosophical aims: "Drive Evil away" and "attract wealth, enlightment and good-luck in politics". Closely following the beliefs of the Guandong people, the print is mainly intended to frighten ghosts away. With its proeminent bagua symbol, it should be placed over the door or the window, always facing the outside of the house. Unlike most of Foshan prints, the background is not painted, because it was not issued by the original "Jun Ji" printshop but by the Foshan City Museum, that now owns the blocks. |
