This
non-credit course has been offered by the Department of
Anglo-American Studies since 1997, trying to respond to
the interest in the writing of poetry shown by some of
our students. Being these students its major target, this
course also challenges poetry readers to participate in
the act of writing and in the discussion about its very
nature.
Held weekly in the form of a seminar,
the course includes therefore two main trends: discussion
and creative writing. Through some exercices suggested
to students, they are challenged to explore diverse forms
of composition and language strategies that the professor
in charge will contextualize in the different literary
traditions of the 20 th century.
Whilst being a course mainly directed
to Literature students, it has however been proved possible
to keep a multidisciplinary orientation (fundamental when
one wants to look at language being used in diverse areas
of knowledge) through the participation of students coming
from fields as different as Maths, Law, Philosophy, Medicine,
Engineering, Physics or Psychology.
We have hosted many different guests
along the years: poets (Portuguese and foreign), but also
experts on many different areas, such as, for instance,
Physics Theory, Cinema or Theater.
The Workshop publishes a little magazine
yearly, Oficina de Poesia (Poetry Workshop) (University
of Coimbra: Directive Board of the Faculty of Letters;
also sponsored by the Centre for Social Studies). #5
forthcoming in May 2001. |
