1st Meeting (4 - 7 May 1992)
In
May 1992, the First International Meeting of Poets took place
in Coimbra, inspired by the tutelary figure of Walt Whitman.
The Meeting gathered together poets and scholars of diverse
nationalities, promoting poetry readings in the native languages
of the authors present, and organizing debates on poetic issues
of contemporary writing. Extending the celebration and the
poetic conviviality to the city of Coimbra - thereby materializing
the very concept of Univer-city - has been one of the Meetings'
first objectives.
About
forty poets from eleven different countries were present in
the First Meeting. The impact of the event on the Portuguese
press, as well as the response on the part of the international
press in the months following the Meeting, were extremely
rewarding. Given that, and since the poets who first came
to visit us were so insistently claiming it, the GEAA decided
to host a Second Meeting. For us, as teachers of poetry, the
most encouraging response was the enthusiasm of our students,
who had the opportunity of experiencing the art of poetry
as a living, acting force in their daily lives.
