  2nd Meeting (28 - 31 May 1995)

The Second International Meeting of Poets took place in May 1995, again bringing together some of the best known voices of contemporary poetry from all over the world. About eighty representatives of nineteen countries of Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Asia came to Portugal for the occasion.

The Meetings continued to hold the Whitmanian democratic ideal as their inspiration, both in the attempt to reach the greatest possible audience and in the will to democratize the canon, by placing consecrated names such as Alberto Pimenta (Portugal), Ana Hatherly (Portugal), Bernard Heidsiek (France), Bob Perelman (USA), Cees Nooteboom (Holland), Eugen Gomringer (Switzerland), Haroldo de Campos (Brazil), or Nicole Brossard (Canada) side by side with some less well-known young poets. In 1995, an effort was made to bring together the greatest possible number of poets from Portuguese-speaking countries and regions. Representatives from Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe were present in the Second Meeting.

Besides several poetry readings, debates and performances, the Second Meeting included a Book Fair and three exhibitions: Poetry Book Exhibition (British Council); Painting and Poetry "Estruturas de Construção" and "Stumbling Words" (Manuel Portela and John Havelda). This event was also marked by the launching of a collection of Contemporary Poetry with books kindly offered by our Guest Poets.

A bilingual volume, edited by Maria Irene Ramalho de Sousa Santos, was published with the title Poesia do Mundo (Porto: Afrontamento, 1995).
