[4/4]
3rd Meeting (7 - 10 May 1998)
After this, the Third International Meeting of Poets seemed
inevitable, and the three-year cycle seemed only natural.
The 1998 Meeting included something new: students of Graça
Capinha's Poetry Workshop
(Oficina de Poesia) of the University of Coimbra also read
their own poems.
The
"Encontros Internacionais de Poetas" have now acquired an
international reputation as a unique event where poetic languages
and traditions meet. Books, poems, performances, and all kinds
of collaboration of different authors have grown out of our
gatherings of poets. The third volume of our bilingual
anthologies will be launched during the 2001
Meeting.
A
lot has changed in Coimbra since the time when Al
Berto
was booed out of one of the town bars while reading his poems.
Now there hardly goes a week without a public poetry reading
happening somewhere in town. The expansion of an audience
for poetry, together with the daily presence of poetry within
the social as an alternative discourse, are yet another incentive
to the continuation of the International Meetings of Poets.
