South Africa

John Mateer
was born in South Africa and now lives in Australia. He is a winner of the Victorian Premier's prize for poetry and was a recipient of the Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian literature and society. He has published four books of poems in Australia, and a number of chapbooks that have appeared in Australia, South Africa, Indonesia and - in translation - in Japan. His most recent poetry publications are Loanwords (Fremantle), Makwerekwere ( Johannesburg ) and The Ancient Capital of Images ( Kyoto ). His first work of non-fiction, Semar's Cave: an Indonesian Journal, will be published in July this year.
